While the rest of the country is beginning the interminably long offseason, Alabama’s deer season is still underway. Hunters from across the country and the world are learning that Alabama is the place to go when the new year starts and other deer seasons end.

That’s especially true for hunters visiting Water Valley Lodge, located in Gilberton. Situated along the Mississippi border two hours north of Mobile, Water Valley is home to monster bucks and long seasons. Deer hunters begin hunting in October and continue until February. This year hunting season runs from October 15, 2016, to February 10, 2017.

The best part? There’s still time to head south for the winter and whitetails.

Tall and tight or tall and wide--Alabama's deer grow big every which way.

Water Valley’s 30,000 acres are under the careful stewardship of Jake Utsey. There are plenty of whitetails and hogs on the property, and come spring there are gobblers galore.

When the evening hunting is done, sit down for a home-cooked dinner in the family dining room, courtesy of Jake’s wife, Pia. Then pull a chair up to the fireplace or the bonfire out back. Both are perfect spots to swap stories and plan for the morning.
