A Montana elk hunter may have just taken the new world-record typical elk. The Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young Clubs have “confirmed the existence of a potential new archery World’s Record typical American elk.” If confirmed, it would be the No. 1 P&Y and No. 4 B&C bull ever officially scored.

The announcement was made by Boone and Crockett Club on Friday, but the actual hunt took place earlier in the season somewhere in Montana. The resident hunter, who has chosen to remain anonymous at this time, was reportedly hunting alone during the state’s archery season when he came across the giant elk.

After a successful hunt and a three-day pack out, the hunter took the antlers to a taxidermist, where they were green-scored by a Boone and Crockett Official Measurer at an incredible net score of 429 6/8 inches (448 4/8 inches gross). If it holds up to the 60-day drying period, it would break the current Pope and Young record—412 1/8 inches—by more than a foot of bone.

Not only would it set a new archery record, this bull would also become the No. 4 All-Time Boone and Crockett typical scorer.

“This bull may well be the largest typical American elk taken in the last 48 years,” Boone and Crockett’s Director of Big Game Records, Justin Spring, said.
