Wranglers know that certain horses like to lead and other horses are better off following the animal ahead of them. The commuter is a horse who is somewhere in the middle of the group and spends its time alternating between burying its nose in the nether regions of the horse ahead and lagging so far behind that it is practically out of sight of the pack. The horses ahead of it generally do not like this form of attention and will occasionally throw a kick into the face of the commuter. When the commuter realizes it is lagging, it typically takes off at a vertebra-rattling trot to catch up and no amount of rein tugging will slow it down.
