A rifle that spent time in the hands of a legendary gunwriter like Jack O’Connor, Charles Askins or Tom Siatos would easily be the centerpiece of most collections. The same holds true for a rifle owned by a contemporary such as Todd Smith or an American Handgunner cover pistol from Roy Huntington. Sportsman’s Legacy is currently offering firearms from each of these writers, along with several others from storied big game hunters and shooting/hunting industry professionals.

Jack O’Connor’s personal .222 Remington is certainly a highlight. Based on a Sako L46 barreled action, serial number 51330 was stocked by Lenard Brownell in 1963. It features a 23-inch factory barrel with the original ramped front sight and remains untapped for a rear sight. The bolt body and extractor have been most properly jeweled. Brownell’s stock is a work of art. Shaped from a broad-grained English (French) walnut, it wears a borderless multi-point wrap checkering pattern with crossing accents, a scalloped Monte Carlo cheek rest with shadow line, steel grip cap and a color case steel butt with widow’s peak. The stock is fitted with sling swivel studs. A single detachable magazine is included. This rifle was sold to Fred Huntington (of RCBS) in the 1970s and remained in his possession for the rest of his life.

Colonel Charles Askins, a lefty, nursed an affinity for wildcat calibers. Sportsman’s Legacy has two of the Unrepentant Sinner’s rifles, an 8mm Remington Magnum from Griffin & Howe with a left-hand conversion by Guise, and a custom Sako in .25-308 Norma.

Tom Siatos played an instrumental role in the success of Guns & Ammo Magazine and the entirety of Petersen’s Publishing Company, and certainly appreciated fine firearms. Several of his handguns, as well as a spectacular custom Winchester Model 70 .30-06 stocked by George Hoenig, are sure to catch your eye.

Todd Smith, formerly of Petersen’s Hunting and Outdoor Life, accumulated a large number of firearms throughout his life. Now semi-retired, he has decided to pass some along so others can take them afield. A nice Model 700 in 7mm Remington Magnum comes to mind, and several more are on the way.

One of Roy Huntington’s best cover pistols, a Smith & Wesson Performance Center Model 629-6 .44 Remington Magnum.

A cover pistol from American Handgunner or Guns Magazine from the collection of long-time Editor, Roy Huntington, is another treasure not to be found at the local gun counter. Several of Roy’s Smith & Wesson and a unique North American Arms mini-revolver are on hand.
