This episode, Edges and Disruptions, is the second part of our series on E-Scouting for elk, specifically public land bull elk, with onX Hunt. Randy discusses a primary need for elk throughout the all seasons of the year, which is food and where to find it at certain times of the year.
The goal of this series is to allow you to scout from home, via computer, and build a very solid hunting plan before you even head to the field. Whether you live ten miles or two days from your unit, this video series will help you plan your hunt, allowing you to be more efficient and more effective.
To find the best elk forage, Randy uses several features on onX Hunt to pinpoint these areas, primarily looking for edges and canopy disruptions. Burns, beetle-killed forests, logged areas, avalanche chutes are among the disruptions that create the conditions to allow grass to grow. Randy also finds it crucial to pay attention to edges of these disrupted areas with that of standing timber and other landscape changes, as elk will need cover in addition to quality forage.
Follow along as Randy continues to dive deeper into the features of onX Hunt and how he finds areas that hold mature bull elk across many different season dates and many different habitat types.
