Bizarre encounters between humans and wildlife are nothing new. With people taking selfies with bison and trying to pet elk, stealing a fawn seems a bit blasé. But that’s just what a woman in California’s Mendocino County did last week. Her efforts landed her in jail within 24 hours, and provides yet another cautionary tale of why you should never handle wildlife.

The San Francisco Gate reported Wednesday that Lacy Jean David, 28, of Ukiah had picked up a fawn on a local roadway around 2 a.m. She found it in good health, but rather than fearing for its survival, she picked the little deer up for monetary gain. A Craigslist ad went live later that day — it has since been taken down — with a $300 price tag for the animal.

Law enforcement quickly took notice and set up a sting. Officials set up a meeting with David and her boyfriend, with the Gate reporting that David “thought she was doing what was right for the animal by selling it.”

She was arrested on the spot, although not for the fawn’s abduction. She had a warrant for failing to appear in an unrelated drug case prior to the deer, but could face a $1,000 fine and a year in jail for attempting to sell wildlife.
