A final report examining the results from 2018’s ruffed grouse West Nile virus sampling effort has been posted. This report summarizes only 2018 data. Samples collected by hunters during the 2019 season were received by the laboratory and a second-year report will be completed once final results are in.

Results from 2018 reveal that although some ruffed grouse are exposed to WNV, they can develop antibodies to the virus and survive exposure. Once the Department has collected three years of data (2018-2020), it will be able to better understand the distribution, prevalence and scope of WNV exposure in Wisconsin’s ruffed grouse population, from which additional actions can be considered.
