In fact, Brays Island was recognized with a Sporting Classics Award of Excellence for its Sporting Lifestyle in 2020.
Ideally located in the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry between Charleston, Savannah and Beaufort, Brays Island spans across 5,500 acres of pristine land cradled by the headwaters of the Port Royal Sound with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean. When you arrive, you instantly feel connected to the community’s unique history, dedication to preservation and love for life outdoors.
As we all know, one of the draws to the sporting life is that no one day is ever the same! The same holds true at the Brays Island Gun Club, where owners and their guests of all skill levels can navigate the dynamic Holland and Holland designed 15-station sporting clays course, recognized as one of the top courses in the nation. They can also hone their FITASC, skeet, trap and five stand skills, or head to the pistol or rifle range.
Owners and their guests are also able to enjoy hunting deer, quail, pheasant and turkey without leaving Brays Island. With 14 well-maintained upland bird units within a 3,500 acre hunting preserve, there’s plenty of room to roam. For many owners, hunting quail is about spending time in the field with family and their own bird dogs. Others prefer guided hunts with Brays Island’s pointing and flushing dog teams that are always ready, thanks to a full-time professional dog trainer.
Whether fly or spin fishing, in fresh or saltwater, Brays Island is an angler’s paradise. Surrounded by tidal saltwater rivers with ocean access and 20 onsite salt and freshwater ponds, Brays is a year-round fishery for redfish, speckled trout and flounder, with seasonal runs of cobia, jack crevalle and tarpon. Brays Island also has a full-service boating department which provides community rental boats, private boat storage and care, launching, cleaning and fueling services, as well as guided fishing trips.
Brays Island is located amid some of the most scenic beauty you’ll find anywhere, and there are plenty of ways to explore this magnificent setting. One of the best ways is on horseback, traversing the 60 miles of equestrian trails and sand roads that wind through serene woodlands and open fields, as well as alongside scenic marsh views and tranquil rivers. In addition to 51 stalls, the equestrian center has 100 acres of pasture spread across many paddocks to accommodate the 70 plus horses in residence, large and small arenas, a training-level dressage arena and a standard-size round pen.
At this sporting paradise, you’ll find a course that offers a premier golfing experience. The Ron Garl-designed championship course is highlighted by impeccable greens and natural hazards. Sprawling over 300 acres, it fits naturally into the existing beauty of the community. Since Brays is a private community shared by just 325 families, there is no need for tee times. With several PGA professionals on staff, an on-site golf school and a 14-acre practice facility, there’s opportunity for all levels of golfers. Outside of a 9- or 18-hole round, the golf program offers a full tournament schedule and numerous onsite events.
Before or after their day of outdoor pursuits, owners and guests can enjoy several onsite dining options from hearty Southern breakfasts to outdoor lunches and five-course wine dinners. With a focus on fresh, seasonal, and locally-sourced foods and comforting Lowcountry fare, the culinary team uses produce directly from the community’s garden and often prepares the day’s fresh catch or game to order. The Brays Island culinary experience is augmented by a wine program led by an onsite sommelier, who also offers wine classes and expos.
The concept of a shared community offers social dividends that are not obvious to the casual observer. Brays Island simply functions differently from a social perspective, in no small part due to the caring staff members who are dedicated to bringing forth a vast array of activities for owners. From nature walks to group trips, oyster roasts to ride and dines-these events and activities ensure easy opportunities to meet different people in varied settings.
At Brays Island, there are multiple ways to own a piece of sporting paradise. Thoughtfully arranged, each of the approximately 250 homes are nestled into the surrounding environment, built to reflect the architectural traditions of the coastal South. An array of available homes and homesites offer the freedom to buy or build as you wish.
