A rifle born in the final chapter of the American frontier is getting a world-class overhaul.

Turnbull Restoration, the masters of rebuilding the greatest guns from some of America’s most thrilling historical periods, has completed the timely restoration of a Winchester Model 1876 rifle commemorating a rare convergence of milestones: the anniversary of the iconic “Centennial Model” and a landmark year in the history of the United States.

The project reflects the company’s commitment to preserving the craftsmanship, authenticity, and historical significance of late 19th-century American lever-action rifles. They are objects that stand as tangible links to the nation’s formative years.

“The Winchester 1876 is inseparable from the spirit of its time,” said Steve Lester, owner of Turnbull Restoration. “To restore one in a year that honors both the rifle’s legacy and our country’s broader story carries special meaning for us. These aren’t just firearms, they’re artifacts of American history.”

Originally introduced in 1876 during the United States’ Centennial celebration, the Winchester Model 1876 was designed to deliver greater power for hunters and frontiersmen pushing into the American West. Its role in that era has secured the Model 1876’s place among the most respected rifles of the period.

The restored rifle, chambered in .50-95 Winchester and originally built in 1883, arrived at Turnbull Restoration bearing the marks of long service. As with all restoration projects undertaken by the company, the objective was not enhancement, but historical fidelity. The company’s mission is always returning the firearm as closely as possible to its original factory configuration.

That process included detailed research into period-correct specifications, careful repair of wear, use, and the effects of time, and the application of the original 19th century finishing methods. The barrel and magazine tube were rust blued, the receiver color case hardened, and smaller components charcoal-blued. Wood restoration preserved the integrity of the stock while returning proper finish and character.

Turnbull Restoration’s philosophy: true restoration honors both the original maker and the passage of time, ensuring that each firearm remains an authentic representation of its era.

The restored Winchester Model 1876 rifle will be offered for sale later in 2026, providing collectors with a unique opportunity to acquire a piece that embodies both historical authenticity and expert restoration. Says Lester, “As always, we hope the next custodian sees this restored ‘76 for what it is. A faithful reflection of its time, and something worth preserving for the next hundred and fifty years.”
