TURKEY CALLS FOR SALE

After giving the matter a bunch of gut-wrenching thought, I’ve decided to sell the vast majority of the turkey calls I’ve accumulated and collected over the years. Just listing and describing them brought back many warm memories of special hunts, great fellowship, thoughts of wonderful companions afield and in turkey camps, and more. It was an ongoing reminder of just how blessed I’ve been in the wonderful world of the wild turkey.

The calls listed and described below run a wide gamut in terms of rarity, price, collectability, quality of the custom callmakers’ work for those in that arena, and more. In addition to the stated price, shipping will be a flat rate of $10, with insurance extra if you desire it. Unless otherwise arranged, I will ship by USPS. All orders and inquiries should be directed to me via e-mail (jimcasada@comporium.net) or regular mail (Jim Casada, 1250 Yorkdale Drive, Rock Hill, SC 29730). I’ll try to answer questions and, in the case of any call priced at $50 or more, I can provide photos.

Any listing with an asterisk (*) preceding the description will include a signed and inscribed copy of my multi-award winning book, Remembering the Greats: Profiles of Turkey Hunting’s Old Masters, with the sale. The call was made by or associated with an individual covered in the book.

Payment in cashier’s check, money order, or personal check. Checks should be made to Jim Casada and the mailing address is: 1250 Yorkdale Drive, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Just ignore the bold print at the end of most of the descriptions which says something such as BOX 1. That is simply information telling me how to access the call according to my admittedly imperfect storage system.

PARKER WHEDON CALLS

*Jordan yelper with cane barrel, brass casing joint, and wingbone along with typical Whedon thread wrapping.  $550.

*Simon Everitt Roanoke River Yelper made by Parker Whedon. December 2003. In bamboo case with cork stopper and use of an actual thread spool to hold the call together for carrying when it was broken down. He broke the code of this call, which originated with fabled hunter Simon Everitt, late in his life and accordingly only built a small number of them. $1200.

*Parker Whedon “The Spirit” yelper in bamboo carrying case dated June 15, 1994 and bearing the number 001 (the first). The call, unlike most that are wrapped in red thread, has green thread. It carries 001 on the bone along with scrimshaw of a gobbler’s head (later versions had the head and a feather) along with his initials, PW. This call is distinctive in a number of ways, most notably in the color of the wrapping. It is the only use of green thread I have ever seen. His normal color scheme was red and black. The enumeration indicates it was the first of what would become his main “calls for sale” offering, “The Spirit,” although he was making what was in essence the same call long before he began selling them or employing a scrimshander to add to their appeal. $1800.

*Early (pre-“The Spirit” designation) Parker Whedon two-piece yelper with red thread and red rubber inside the 28 gauge shell top used as a mouth stop. No markings. $550.

*Parker Whedon “Spirit Yelper” in bamboo carrying case labeled “Made by Parker Whedon for Jim Casada October, 2005.” $750. SOLD.

*Parker Whedon “Spirit Yelper” with scrimshaw of turkey head and feather and “Grump” (the scrimshander’s nickname) along with P. W. on the call. With printout of e-mail from Parker providing background information. $750. SOLD.

*Parker Whedon Jordan II Yelper (combination of wingbone and adjustable acrylic end, with a lengthy note from Parker tipped in) in a bamboo carrying case. The cane carrying case has split, as many of them do over time thanks to not having been cured properly. The clear barrel was an approach first taken by Larry Hearn, Parker’s longtime running mate who did the patent work on the crown trumpet. $1300.

  1. D. “PECK” MARTIN CALLS

“Peck” Martin was a staunch son of West Virginia, a self-proclaimed hillbilly who wore pride in his mountain roots as a badge of honor. That endeared him to me the first time we met, because my background had a number of similarities to his. Over the years Peck gave me a number of calls, all of them featuring one or more of the distinct touches he brought to his craft. He was hard working, gifted, gracious, and gregarious. He also had some talents that extended beyond working with his hands. For a number of years I served, with Gerry Blair, as co-editor of Turkey & Turkey Hunting magazine. During that period Peck wrote, with my encouragement, a piece that I personally consider as ranking in the top ten turkey tales I’ve ever read (and I’ve read most everything ever written about the sport). It pulled all the right emotional strings—hunting sacred family ground, memories of his grandmother, a sense of what is really important in life, and a grand hunt. As for the calls, many of them featured wormy chestnut, and that was because Peck realized, during the course of one of our conversations, just how fascinated I was by the sad saga of this one-time giant of Appalachian forests. The calls below are among those he made for me, and while he may not enjoy quite the fame of some other custom call makers, rest assured that in my view he was as genuine, as much the real deal as a man, hunter, and craftsman, as anyone.

Inman Turpin yelper. There is no indisputable provenance with this call but two experts who have examined it in detail are, to quote them 99% certain it is an Inman Turpin. Furthermore, the manner in which it came to me is highly suggestive in that regard. Late in life, when Parker realized his days were numbered, he gave one or two mementoes to a number of his good friends and hunting buddies. I was fortunate enough to be among them. He gave me a copy of a rare book I did not have in my extensive turkey hunting library, Old Marster’s Cedar Grove, and placed a number of yelpers in front of me saying simply, “pick one out.” I did so without thinking any more about it, and my selection was primarily on the basis of having “run” several of them and getting sound I particularly liked from this one along with finding it exceptionally easy to use. I did not realize it was a Turpin. Parker may or may not have been aware—by that time Parkinson’s disease was afflicting him to an appreciable degree—but if so he said nothing. That’s the background as I have it, and again, others with in-depth knowledge are convinced it is the “real McCoy.” $2300. ZIP-LOC. SOLD.

DIAPHRAGMS (MOUTH CALLS)

Most of these mouth calls are more than twenty years old. While they have never been used the likelihood is great that the latex is ruined. It doesn’t stand the test of time that well, even though the calls have been in a cabinet protected in a plastic bag. I’m selling only those that have identifying marks—such as the plastic case or sleeve they originally came in. None have been used. I’m offering them as potential collector items, not as something to carry afield. Shipping will be less on these if that is all you order.

In Remembering the Greats, a 317-page hardbound book, Jim Casada brings his training as an historian, his decades of studying the grand masters of the sport, his avid collecting of the literature, and his personal hunting experiences to bear in a detailed examination of the careers of 27 icons from turkey hunting’s past. Collectively they epitomize the essence of what old timers sometimes refer to as true “turkey men.”

Each vignette focuses on the person’s contributions to the world of turkey hunting in capacities such as callmaking, authors of articles and books, avid hunters, seminar speakers, television personalities, biologists, conservationists, and more. Two common threads typify every man profiled: their consuming love of the wild turkey and the fact that they were fascinating characters. Buy Now
