It’s that time of year, ladies and gentlemen, when we hunt for the hidden gems!
While the fall and winter hunting seasons have faded into memory and geese and ducks are starting to reverse their wandering course and now fly north, I have the strong urge to head afield. The great news is that it’s time to hunt the needle in the haystack — shed antlers.
OK, Mike has antlers he has found lying everywhere from the front porch to the fireplace to atop nightstands. He even has some discovered shed antlers hanging on posts by the driveway. I must confess — antlers are awesome. The odd thing is Mike never chews on them but antler chews are popular with dogs, like me. I’ve seen the price some dog supply sources get for those antlers, or small pieces of antlers, and Mike is a millionaire in bones. The bad news is he does not share and will not let me chew on the elk and deer antlers he finds, so I have to keep searching to find my own antler. That is one of the thrills of spring when the snow disappears and the warm sunshine reappears — the hunt for antlers begins.
OK, while deer antlers are easy to find, pick up and carry, I need help with most bulky elk antlers. More bad news is that those massive antlers are often high in the mountains and it is a long way back to the truck. Instead of dragging the heavy, long and cumbersome antlers along, I show these to Mike and let him become my pack mule. He can carry the load, I have other things to do, like sniffing all the bushes and checking out game trails.
