The Russell Moccasin Wyman boot is now live! If you were an explorer or avid sportsman in the early 1900s, it is more than likely that the Russell Chief was your boot of choice. This style, worn by Charles Lindbergh, was rekindled by Texas State Photographer Wyman Meinzer back in the early 1980s for wildlife photography in the vast Big Empty. For the modern adventurer, it still provides a level of extreme durability and athletic comfort that can only be described as timeless. If you want to understand the boot and it’s application, you first have to know the man who made it famous. The video below is an awesome overview.

Introduced in the early 1900s, the Wyman was originally known as the Chief. At the time it was Russell’s most popular boot and was worn by Charles Lindbergh among others. The high top was designed for protection against brush and briars while hiking, fishing, and hunting. In the early 1980s, Wyman Meinzer had the style specially made and updated for his work as a trapper and later as a professional wildlife photographer. Wyman Meinzer is the only official State Photographer of Texas, named so in 1997 by the Texas State Legislature and then Gov. George W. Bush, an honor he still holds today.

The Leather

Made from our classic water-resistant, full-grain Walnut Timberjack leather, The Wyman is protective, water resistant, and incredibly durable. Walnut Timberjack is a full grain leather tanned at S.B. Foot in Minnesota specially for Russell Moccasin. Over time it darkens and develops a rich patina. Stuffed with waxes and oils, Timberjack has a beautiful pull-up and is easily maintained with an occasional conditioning with Obenaufs.

The Construction

The Wyman is made with our famous Double Vamp Moccasin construction. This construction makes the lower part of the boot highly water-resistant and provides extra durability. The Wyman is 15″ tall and featured oak-leather heel counters.

The Sole

A hybrid sole construction is used on the Wyman, combining the midsole structure of the Backcountry with the mountain climbing capability of the Big Cambo. The Vibram Sierra outsole is mated to the boot via a rockered toe wedge. This combination helps protect the foot while hiking in rocky terrain, while also providing a tennis-shoe like stride on flat ground.
