The R3 initiative – Recruit, Retain and Reactivate – is a national movement in response to a crisis. Hunting participation in America peaked in 1982, when 17 million hunters purchased 28.3 million licenses. In 2016, only 11.5 million people hunted – less than four percent of the national population. This trend could be disastrous for our wildlife, as hunters fund conservation and 59 percent of the funding for state wildlife agencies come from license fees and excise taxes on guns, ammunition and equipment. The simplest way to join the R3 movement and help support our nation’s wildlife and conservation programs is to mentor a youth hunter. This week on Sporting Classics with Chris Dorsey, the Dorsey family visits a remote lodge in Saskatchewan where Luke Dorsey looks to harvest his first black bear. More importantly, the torch is being passed from father to son to help continue the heritage that funds our nation’s wildlife management programs.
