Sporting Classics Editor Chuck Wechsler took this big buck last week at Timberghost Ranch, a thousand-acre whitetail operation tucked away in the wooded foothills of the Mississippi River in southeastern Iowa. Hunting with his .30-06 Barrett Fieldcraft Rifle, Chuck demonstrated once again what a textbook whitetail shot should look like.
Timberghost has garnered nationwide attention among serious deer hunters for its trophy whitetails, which are known for their giant antlers and massive bodies.
“This buck really appealed to me because of its unusually long brow tines, which measured 10 and 13 inches in length,” said Wechsler. “The rack was wide and very heavy, gross-scoring 187 B&C points.”
Timberghost built its rustic, 13,000-square foot log lodge in 1999 and, under the guidance of manager Mike Hine, opened its door to deer hunters the following year.
“Timberghost was created by whitetail addicts who understand the passion of hunters who love chasing monster whitetails,” says Hine. “It was created to give people an opportunity to share a unique experience—a truly authentic hunt, chasing trophy whitetails on a beautiful property where every decision that’s made is aimed at producing the most incredible whitetail habitat and hunting environment in the country.”
