It is springtime at Brays Island. Turkey hunting is in full swing, the redfish are biting, cobia season is just around the corner, and the weather is perfect for a day on the sporting clays course, golf course, or equestrian trail.
Owning property at Brays Island ensures that you have access to, and can enjoy a wide array of outdoor sporting recreation without the managerial headaches associated with property ownership. A great illustration of this can be found in the meticulously managed hunt lands here at Brays.
“Of the 5,500 total acres, approximately 3,500 acres make up the hunt lands,” said Marion Gohagen, Hunt Department Director. “Of that 3,500 acres, we probably manage around 1,500 acres of upland habitat.”
The quality of the hunt lands found on Brays Island is no accident, and much planning and hard labor is required. In keeping with Sumner Pingree’s desire to protect the natural state of his land, staff work diligently throughout the year to ensure that the wildlife on the plantation thrives. By utilizing wildlife management tools that are effective but do not rely on the use of chemicals and heavy machinery, our hunt staff cultivates highly durable upland habitat that lasts throughout the season. Prescribed burning is an ecologically sound way to improve the land, allowing fire to do the work instead of machines or chemicals. And best of all, owners never have to pick up a drip torch!
So feel free to spend the next few months fishing, shooting, golfing, riding, or boating. Enjoy visiting nearby destinations like Charleston, Savannah, and Beaufort. Meet and enjoy the company of other like-minded owners. Just know that when fall arrives, everything will be ready and waiting for you and your sporting dogs!
