London gunmaker John Rigby & Co.’s new art department has unveiled three new limited edition stamps by talented in-house engravers Geoffrey Lignon and Saija Koskialho. Each collection of 50 stamps feature either a European roebuck by Finnish artist Saija or African kudu or oryx by French artist Geoffrey.
Hand-signed and numbered by the artists, before being relief stamped with the Rigby logo, each print comes presented in a beautiful Rigby blue envelope, wax sealed with the Rigby ‘double R’ logo, making it the perfect gift idea.
To create the stamps the artists began by engraving the animals on a 3-4mm thick metal plate. Once completed, the paper for the transfers was soaked in water and the engraving plate dipped in a solution of etching ink and sepia-coloured paint to give it that authentic, period look. The engraving plates were then passed through a rolling press with the paper, to transfer the artwork and create these unique stamps.
The engraving of the roebuck has taken Saija nine hours to complete, whereas the engravings of the kudu and oryx has taken Geoffrey 15 and 12 hours, respectively. What makes Geoffrey’s stamps even more unique is that these were originally engraved while he was studying at the Liege School of Gunmaking in Belgium and these original plates were used as part of his portfolio in applying for his position at Rigby over four years ago.
