What constitutes a “fine” shotgun? Is it simply a gun that was made by hand through countless hours of labor? Or is it really about the rarity, the uniqueness, the overall quality of the design and function of the gun itself, whether handcrafted or machine manufactured? Caesar Guerini has the answer, and it’s called the Revenant.

The innovative and relatively young company recognized hunters’ overwhelming desire to own a fine gun–guns that are works of art. However, the price point for handcrafted was and is astoundingly high. Through Guerini’s synthesis of artistry and 21st century technology, the Revenant was born, or rather reborn, as the term “revenant” literally means “returned from the dead.” In other words, the Revenant serves as a revival of the classic, romantic, ornately engraved “fine” shotguns of the past. Its design incorporates features that were once exclusive to handmade, which allows for a price point that is unprecedented for a gun with such beauty and detail–qualities often ignored by contemporary gunmakers today.

The Revenant is not a copy or replica. It is a work of art in its own right that captures the essence and spirit of the hand-made classics. With its round body action, Boss-style forend and inletted escutcheon surrounding the push-button release, its design echoes that of hand-crafted shotguns. However, by taking advantage of the CNC (Computer Numerical Control) and laser manufacturing revolution, Guerini is able to fine-tune these elements to create a firearm with smooth, practically seamless transitions.

Perhaps its most striking feature, the Revenant’s engraving is exceptional. Guerini partnered with world-renowned engraver, Bottega C. Giovanelli, to create an elegant design of maple leaves, branches and gamebirds displayed on the sideplates and highlighted with gold accents. What is even more impressive is the depth and layers of the scene itself. Such dimension was once only found in hand-crafted firearms, but Guerini is a leading innovator in incorporating those one-of-a-kind elements into production.

In creating this contemporary shotgun, Guerini does not overlook the time-honored tradition of hand-made firearms. Although each Revenant is crafted through 40 hours of engraving, 15 of those hours are spent on hand-engraving, combining both the modern technology of Italy’s artisans with the strokes of the master engraver’s revered practice.

Other attractive aspects include the skeletonized forend for optimal balance and weight, an array of choke tubes to meet any need, impeccable wood and checkering and the matte, flat-topped rib. Finally, the beautiful deluxe walnut gun stocks are complemented by a hand-rubbed oil finish–a more traditional finish used by the most esteemed gunmakers in the world.

Revenant shooters commend the shotgun’s fluidity and effortlessness in the field. Gun enthusiast, Robert Matthews, claims “The gun simply flies to the shoulder and tracks a target in the way that only a fine, perfectly balanced gun can.”

With such distinct, charming character, the Revenant is unparalleled when it comes to manufactured firearms. It is altogether rare, unique and high quality. The late gun connoisseur, Michael McIntosh, once said in a profound reference to manufactured firearms: “What difference does it make if Michelangelo used a jackhammer to cut away the excess around David?” It would be art, nonetheless, and the final product is essentially the same, if not better. So too is the Revenant–a truly fine gun by any definition.
