I admit to being an optimist. I must be to hunt with Mike because I am always hoping he shoots the bird down when I flush it. Often his errant shot misses, but I keep hunting because I know he will get his bird sooner or later — or make that sometime, har har! My eyes are on the future — and it looks bright. Well, it looks bright to me through my bright yellow eyes.
Just yesterday, I glanced at the calendar and noted it is only approximately three months until the duck season opens. I have written several times that I truly love hunting all upland birds but last season I jumped into frigid rivers and added ducks and geese to my retrieving resume. I have to report I have since endured many insults and have regularly been called Quack-o-matic because I like to hunt ducks. Well, when I see a bird flying overhead now, I get excited — and I whine. I want Mike to shoot it. He explains those songbirds, sparrows and swallows are off limits. Bummer, but I guess laws are good and must be followed. If not, hoomans would just run amuck, har har!
So, I look ahead to the upcoming waterfowl season. I know Mike has already been gearing up. He bought more calls and a lay-out blind (hope there’s room inside for me and my cushy dog bed), and his best hunting friend bought new camouflage waders. All this shopping (they forgot to buy something for me) and gearing up means in a short time we will be watching the skies for incoming ducks and geese. Hopefully Mike spends time this summer practicing with his shotgun or we will be stopping at the grocery store for meat for the grill. My life is a rollercoaster of ups and downs. That sums up hunting with miss-em-Mike, har har! The birds are up, but often they do not come down. He misses!
I will admit Mike can operate a duck call. I believe the next time he leaves those lying on the counter I may grab one and give it a try. Then I will truly be Quack-o-matic. Of course he has goose calls also, so I could also become Honk-o-matic. I better start calling waterfowl, the hunting seasons will be here soon. Quack, quack har har. —Cameron
