In the wilds of Alaska, Forrest Harper learned to appreciate fire for its most basic qualities – heat, light and food. Gathering friends around the pit or grill on a chilly evening, simply to enjoy conversation and libations, came many years later.

It began when Forrest set out for Alaska in the sixties, hoping to work on the oil pipeline and claim his 320 acres of Alaskan wilderness. Inspired by Jack London’s classic, The Call of the Wild, he yearned to experience the wild country of the last frontier for himself.

Those dreams were sidetracked when the pipeline and associated land program were shut down shortly after his arrival. While working in Anchorage for a building supply company, Forrest met some members of the Utah Ski Rescue team who had also come for the pipeline jobs and free land. Wanting to get a taste of the Alaskan wilderness, the group spent the winter camping and living off the land. During the rugged five months of perpetual darkness and subzero temperatures, fire was necessary for survival.

Nothing beats the joy of cooking over a wood fire grill! This sturdy, versatile cooker provides the resourceful chef a world of options.

The Jessup, Georgia native returned to the lower 48 where his life’s adventures turned to the sea, where he’s sailed far and wide. Yet he never lost his appreciation for the feeling the warmth of a fire gave him, nor the pleasure that came from gathering friends around the glow of the embers to spin yarns of those wilder days.

A lifetime of adventure has culminated in Harper’s PauHana Grill and Firepit. The unique tilting feature practically turns the pit into a fireplace for directional heating, while the heavy oyster plate/fire cover makes it easy to snuff out the flames. And the food? You can’t beat the PauHana for flavorful, perfectly cooked steaks, burgers, game and fish recipes – you name it.

You’ll have to supply your own stories and friends, but the PauHana grill and firepit will keep you warm until the last story is told.
