Emma M. McCracken has recently joined the Sporting Classics team as its new Assistant Editor – Digital and will oversee production of Sporting Classics Daily e-newsletter, along with other aspects of Sporting Classics’ digital channels.
McCracken is an MA of English graduate from Clemson University where she served as an editor for The South Carolina Review literary magazine and as an assistant at the campus Writing Center. As a part of her graduate education, McCracken developed a creative thesis project for which she researched the changes in southern literature over time, from Eudora Welty and Flannery O’Conner to contemporary writers such as Lee Smith and Jill McCorkle. This project also features some of McCracken’s own short stories, which take place in the southeastern region of the U.S., a region with a unique culture near and dear to her heart.
Raised in the South Carolina Lowcountry, McCracken developed a love for the outdoors early on. “I spent much of my childhood crabbing and shrimping on the May River,” she said, “But I think my interest in sporting dogs and shooting was passed down to me from my dad.” McCracken grew up with her father’s short-haired pointers, Labrador retrievers, and Deutsch-Drahthaars. “I love to watch versatile sporting dogs work in the field and water,” said McCracken. When she is not reading or writing, McCracken enjoys shooting skeet or going out on the river with family and friends.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to join Sporting Classics in its mission to preserve the heritage, the romance and the art of hunting and fishing,” said McCracken, “especially through our digital platforms, with the hope that I can contribute to the passing down of this lifestyle to a new generation of readers.”
