There’s your clue!

If you remember the odd comment about nearly everything a few years past, everyone was saying: “There’s your clue!” This comment came when folks everywhere would wonder what to do next or which road in life to take when a fork in the road appeared. Well, hunting has clues.

Just the other day Mike was driving and I was in the back seat but had my head over his shoulder. I supervise and watch as he drives.

Anyway, we were going ruffed grouse hunting, and suddenly a ruffed grouse strolled across the trail and went down the bank. There’s a clue that was impossible to miss and luckily Mike took note!

We soon found a place to park, Mike uncased and loaded a Benelli ETHOS 20-gauge shotgun, and then he opened the door so I could exit. If I had a cape, you could see I was now truly flying. In a second I was on the trail and down the bank. This clue was red hot, and I’m on it. There’s my clue!

There was so much bird scent in the grasses, trees and brush in this area that I became a whirlwind. Soon, grouse were flushing wildly and then I heard it — Mike took a shot. I know not to get excited, he shoots a lot and often misses. But then I heard another clue, limbs breaking and a soft thud. I ran to the spot and a stunning ruffed grouse was dead on the ground. Great shooting, Mike.

Anyway, in short order I had the grouse in my mouth and delivered it to Mike. Well, it was not a clean delivery, I spit the bird out, wheeled about and ran back into the brush. Grouse were flying everywhere — but Mike did not shoot. After a few minutes of birds exploding from the brush all around, I went back to be certain Mike was alive. He was.

Ok, he claims he could not see any of those birds that went south and away from him because of dense leaves on the trees. Ah, the frustration of early season grouse hunting. Anyway, there were golden aspen leaves all around in this location which means in a few weeks the leaves will be gone — and we will be back. I hope Mike remembers to bring treats, water, treats, shotshells and treats. There are the other clues for him — all good hunts start with treats, har har!  —Cameron
