Yes, dogs can tell time.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock or deep inside a cave, it’s a well-known fact that dogs can tell time. I know that every morning between 6 and 7am, it’s time to eat. My empty stomach gives me the clue. Then around 10 or 10:30am, I go into Mike’s office and let him know it’s time for my daily hike. Around noon, when I hear the distant town’s daily noon fire alarm, I know it’s time for my lunch and let Mike know his server and waiter skills are needed. Around 3pm each day is when I again enter the office, nudge Mike’s elbow and give him the stare. It’s now time to play the game — or go outside and play fetch.
The great news is that after more than seven years of work, Mike is finally highly trained ( he’s a slow learner) and receives my hints or clues very well. I can tell time based on the sun overhead or shining in a window, that distant fire alarm, and when my stomach feels empty. Of course about two to three hours after I eat a meal, I am then well stocked with energy and I feel the need to burn some of it off. That’s when I nudge Mike and tell him his door opening and bumper tossing skills are required.
OK, I see that Mike struggles with time. He’s always looking at a wrist watch, the corner of his computer for that tiny time clock and is then checking the time on his cellphone. He has all those sources of time, and he still gets behind. I, however, work to keep him on schedule —my schedule, har har!
Yes, dogs can tell time. Now that you are through reading this, it’s time to open the door and let the dog(s) out. You hooman’s just cannot master time, har har! So, ask a dog. —Cameron.
