As you make plans to get outdoors, remember to include your dog.

It must be the rules of life in Montana — everyone has a truck and a dog, and where the truck goes the dog goes. I believe Montana leads the nation in trucks on the road with dogs inside. OK, some ranchers put the dog on the open bed of their truck, and every now and then there are WANTED posters featuring dogs that have fallen off the back of those trucks. Ugh. I have a rule that I never ride in the back of any truck — period. I also do not ride in kennels in the back of trucks. It’s in the cab only for me to travel.

Anyway, as you make plans to get outdoors, remember to include your dog, or a neighbor’s dog, or just any dog. Dogs like to go! The truly odd thing is that most hunters want to be a dog’s best friend when fall hunting seasons arrive, so dogs are nearly always asked to ride along.  When the seasons close, however, the hunting dogs go into a backyard kennel and stay there until next fall. No more rides. Not a successful hunting plan and dog relationship building program, thus more dogs need lawyers, har har!

I pay attention in my house, and if Mike gets near the door leading out to the garage, I quickly run over and get up against the door. My rule is solid: if he’s going, I’m going! He can’t get out the door until I have run out into the garage. Once in the garage, I further implement my become-an-obstacle plan and stand beside the truck so he can’t open the door and get in until I first hop up and get in. Gotta keep those dogs riding in truck numbers high in America.

So, if you have summer plan is to go camping, hiking, fishing, shopping, riding around or hunting for new hunting areas, take the dog(s). We will instantly let you know if there are any skunks, bears, rattlesnakes, cats and other problems about out there.

Remember, when making plans to go on a trip, prepare for a comfortable day for your leader of the pack — the dog. Along with water, treats, food, treats, a leash and treats, think about sunscreen. Yes, dogs can get sunburned — trust me here. If your travel plans are lots of driving with your co-pilot dog’s head out the window, I suggest you consider a set of goggles — for the dog. Yes, these are available for dogs. Don’t want a bug in the eye, ugh!

So make plans and take time to get outdoors, you deserve a break. If you forget the dog, your house could be rearranged when you return, har har! —Cameron
