Fall at Brays Island brings with it the much anticipated scene of crisp mornings, rock steady pointers and eager cockers culminating in a burst of bobwhites in every direction.
With 3,500 acres of quail courses and woodlands, Brays is every upland bird hunter’s dream property.
Ideally located in the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry between Charleston, Savannah, and Beaufort, Brays Island is a world-renowned private sporting community. Brays Island spans across 5,500 acres of pristine land that is cradled by the headwaters of the Port Royal Sound with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean. When you arrive, you instantly feel connected to the community’s unique history, dedication to preservation and love for life outdoors.
October 15th marks the beginning of quail season at Brays. As one heads to the hunt fields, there’s a stillness in the air that’s filled with excitement, passion and eagerness. Once the dogs are on point and the signal is given, the fun begins!
To quote renowned outdoorsman and Brays owner, Chris Dorsey, from a recent Forbes article: “Therein lies the magic and allure of bobwhite quail hunting. How a four-ounce bird can electrify a man’s nerves, quicken his pulse and cause him to lose his coordination is one of the medical wonders of the hunting world. A classic case of quail fever with no known cure. And if there were one, who would want it?”
For many owners, hunting quail is about time in the field with family, friends and their own bird dogs. As hunting season draws to a close, Brays holds annual flushing and pointing dog trials which brings out some fierce but healthy competition amongst the owners. The sense of pride that most bird dog owners have in their beloved canines needs little explanation, so the stakes are high in pursuit of ultimate bragging rights!
Other owners prefer to use one of Brays Island’s full-time guides and a team of Brays pointing and flushing dogs that are always ready, thanks to on-site dog trainer, Scott Miller. Scott is a hall-of-fame trainer with more than 90 National Bird Hunter Association (NBHA) championship titles under his belt.
Winter temperatures at Brays Island typically range between 40 and 60 degrees, which is perfect for upland bird hunting, yet temperate enough to spend an afternoon on a flats boat in pursuit of Redfish. Our climate is very nearly as important as our unmatched location and unique land plan, making Brays the most desired outdoor community on the eastern seaboard.
At Brays Island, there are multiple ways to own a piece of sporting paradise, and experience the thrill of quail season for years to come. Thoughtfully arranged, only 325 circular homesites are nestled into the surrounding environment, and spectacular homes reflect the architectural traditions of the coastal South. An array of available homes and homesites offer the freedom to buy or build as you wish.
