I am very focused on the skies overhead.

While a majority of the hunting I am involved in requires looking ahead at eye level or on the ground for pheasants, grouse and such, there are periods when I need to look up. Eyes on the sky, if you will, when waterfowl hunting.

I get thrilled when I see ducks and geese, plus magpies, songbirds and anything flying. I see movement in the sky and I start whining. I’m excited, so I whine so Mike will look up and start shooting. He gets distracted looking for gloves, shotshells, staring at any decoys he has tossed out and nearly anything. He needs to focus! I am very focused on the skies overhead.

OK, occasionally Mike is paying attention and when I whine, he looks up. Yes, he needs more training here but I’m working on his deficiencies, har har!

I will admit, one thing I like about waterfowl hunting is seeing birds fly. In fact, a few times when Mike and I have been moving through deep darkness to get into a waterfowl hunting blind, I have smelled or heard ducks and geese and have splashed into the rivers and lakes to get a bird. OK, they often take to wing and head for South America. I can hear Mike grumbling in the background about how it’s dark and still prior to legal shooting hours. Hey, it’s my job to find waterfowl and there went a huge cloud of them, har har!

When daylight sweeps the land I am sitting and looking up. Much like a jack-in-the-box, I’m ready to pop out. No winding up required for me to spring into action. I know, Mike explains that is why he often ties me to a stake inside the blind. He claims when I run out as the ducks have set their wings and are coming in and down, they flare away. I think this is one of his unproven theories.

Anyway, I like watching the skies for incoming geese and ducks. If Mike would hand me a duck call, I could possibly turn my loud whines into feeding chatters and attract more ducks, har har!

In the meantime, look over there, something is flying. Shoot ’em! Har har! —Cameron
