These forgotten images remind us there are few joys as simple and unchanging as trekking into the woods or to a disremembered stream.
The Sporting Classics editors happened across a collection of old hunting and fishing photographs, all of which are unattributed and their origins unknown. The snapshots hail from various decades, but, when viewed together, depict hunting and fishing’s refreshing timelessness. As technology continues reshaping our lives and work, these images—many of them beautiful, others candid and stark—remind us there are few joys as simple and unchanging as trekking into the woods or to a disremembered stream. While we no longer know the names or stories of the people photographed, their passions will be forever felt and shared by sportsmen hungry for time afield.

Photographs and artifacts from Bob Timberlake’s earliest days — boyhood sketches and paintings, collections of sporting art and memorabilia, including historical decoys and firearms — accompany Timberlake’s stories, in his own words, of his decision to become an artist, of hunting and fishing and the love of the outdoors, of those who helped and encouraged him, and of an extended family of friends and loved ones who “brought him up” to realize early on “that it takes only three things,” he writes, “to be truly happy: something to look forward to, something worthwhile to work hard towards, and someone to love.” Shop Now
