Dove season is coming — and that right soon!
Well, if you have been sleeping these hazy days of summer away, you may have missed the fact your calendar indicates dove season is coming — and will be here soon! I love hunting doves. There’s lots of shooting, birds flying everywhere and if you get your limit of doves then great eating follows. OK, I hunt with Mike so there is lots of shooting, and it’s questionable if there will be any great eating on the horizon because he misses — a lot.
In many places, hunters prepare fields of wheat, corn, sunflowers or other crops or plants that are mowed to attract doves. Old ponds and gravel pits with water holes also seem to attract doves. Add in shotguns, shot shells and other hunting gear and soon the cash register is smoking and your credit card is melting, but you are going dove hunting.
Since a mess of doves (often about 15 birds) will weigh less than a pound when breasted and made ready for the grill, take note that dining on doves could be one of the most expensive meals you will ever eat in your life. By my calculations the shotshells, shotguns and other dove hunting gear can easily add to more than $500 per year, and that’s when amortizing the price of the shotgun over a five year span. When you add in the cost of bacon per pound on today’s market for wrapping the dove breasts, you can see that a plate of dove breasts will be worth about $550. Eat up!
In closing, those dove seasons are on the horizon. Get your gear together, invite some friends and be ready. The US Fish & Wildlife Service estimates there are about 165 million doves in America. That’s a lot of flying objects to shoot at. Stay safe and fire up the grill, har har! —Cameron
