Things didn’t slow down for Sporting Classics as the annual Dallas Safari Club convention entered its second day. Jim Carmichel signed more copies of his new book, Classic Carmichel, and new subscribers came to the magazine’s booths in droves.

Amid the bustle of the day was a reunion for two hunters: Rifle Editor Ron Spomer met up with good friend Laurel Barbieri, DSC’s Artist of the Year, and reminisced about their recent trip to the Namibian desert in search of plains game and prehistoric paintings.

The story of their quest appeared in Sporting Classics‘ special Guns & Hunting 2015 issue. Entitled “Hunting For Art,” the story chronicles Ron and Laurel’s hunt for hartebeest while viewing the paintings of Namibia’s San Bushmen. The article explores the way artists have captured the hunt with stunning and reverent portraits — whether on rock walls eons ago or canvas today.  It was Laurel’s first trip to Africa; she took a red hartebeest with a single shot from a Blaser R8 in .308 Winchester, returning home with imagery that has inspired her subsequent artwork.
