Well, it is time to change gears and go in search of pheasants, sharptails and huns.
I’ve been hiking in sage brush and through dense forests for the past month. The target on my treks and hunts — grouse. OK, Mike and his friend, Marlon, have managed to bring down a few of the grouse. Score! However, it’s time to take a vacation and change the focus.
It will be another hunting vacation soon when Mike packs the truck and we head east to the land of pheasants. I like pheasants because they lurk in brush and think they are hidden as they wait. I can smell them from a mile away — or so it seems. Once my keen nose has the scent, it’s back and forth until I locate the source of the scent, zero on the bird’s exact location, raise a leg — and point. While I’m doing all this work, Mike is just wandering around back there with a shotgun. Ugh, maybe it’s time for me to join a union or work with a hunter who is quicker on his feet, har har!
Well, it is time to change gears and go in search of pheasants, sharptails and huns. The great news is there will be little or no sage brush in the country out east. Moving through sage brush is hard work — believe me! Pheasant hunting is also about trekking in the land of coulees and rolling hills, not the steep mountains and deep canyons I have been maneuvering through for the past month. I need the break from all that work.
This year I’ll take a calculator and note pad along — and I’m keeping score. On one side will be my picturesque points, and on the other side will be a column for Mike’s many shots. Maybe a third column will be to keep track of his many misses, har har! I may actually need another note pad for those numbers. They come often, ugh. I’ll report the results when I return from hunting vacation! —Cameron
