This Weim Wednesday, Cameron feels the heat of summer and starts his two-month countdown to bird hunting season – his favorite time of year.

Look at the calendar and you will note it is July, so that means one thing — hunting season begins in about two months. Trust me, I can count. By my calculations, after every meal I head to the counter by the refrigerator and wait for two treats — or my full dessert. I get not one but two treats so don’t short me on treats. Give only one treat and I will stare you down. Knowing how to count is important.

I know by my calendar that soon the hot days of summer will be pushed aside by cooler temperatures at night — and then bird hunting seasons are open. On opening day, and the months to follow, it’s game on for birds — and exciting trips to the mountains to pursue grouse. If you are hunting doves with a dog, remember that dogs can easily overheat, so bring that dog some water and provide shade. Oh yeah, remember to bring water for you also unless you wish to drink out of a dog bowl.

This year I have Hungarian partridges and sharp-tails on my winged-wonders Hit List. Well, I find the birds, and Mike is supposed to do the hitting with a swarm of shot launched from his shotgun. While I’m proud of some of his spectacular shots made with a shotgun, some rather easy shots have been clean and embarrassing misses. If other hunters are afield with us, I move nearer to them and act like I don’t know Miss ’em Mike. It’s embarrassing when he misses the easy shots. I am looking for a shooting school for him now. I also act as if I don’t hear him when he says he needs one more shotgun. He should learn to use the ones he has!

For those Sporting Classics Daily readers who have dogs, start now to be ready for the opener. I recommend hunting pigeons to stay on your A-game. Mike found a farm shed where pigeons think they rule the roost. Well, they do until I dash in and those birds go flapping crazy into the air trying to get away. Mike is waiting outside with his shotgun and if all goes as planned—it rains pigeons. Sometimes there’s a drought though because Mike misses. Enough said.

My hunting season goals this year are to hunt the most ever, for the most species ever—and in the most places ever. Mike may need to apply for another credit card just to meet my hectic hunting schedule.
