This summer season has been a scorcher! Here’s how our friend Cameron the Weimaraner cools off during those Dog Days.

In much of America the outside temperatures have been true scorchers the past few weeks. The Dog Days of Summer continue to bear down upon us — and especially me since I am a dog. Stop now and note that there are no cow, cat, kids, snakes or rodent days of summer or any time. Dogs rule!

Since Mike has not installed my requested swimming and dipping pool in the backyard, I have been going to a small lake and some local rivers to swim, splash and cool off. Dog days do not mean dogs have to stay indoors by the air conditioner and sip ice water from a crystal dog bowl. Dog Days just mean dogs need to find exciting ways to cool off.

My favorite cooling-in-the-water game is Go-n-Grab. Mike gives the “ready” command while I’m on the bank, then I slowly turn my head toward the water and dive in with a huge splash. Next, he tosses a rubber duck and I swim out to grab it.  In case you are wondering or are new to swimming, the dog paddle is obviously the best way to move through water. I use that method all the time. Dog paddling should be an Olympic swimming event. I’m sending a note to the International Olympic Committee now with my recommendation.

I also have another way to stay cool in the summer heat — going fishing. I enjoy wading in pools of frigid mountain water in trout streams and plunging into lakes and ponds also. Yeah, I believe I hear Mike screaming in the background because he claims he was trying to fish there before I plunged in and scared all the fish away. Stop screaming, Mike, I’ll dive down and check for any hungry trout.

I know he rarely catches any fish, so I recommend he stop at the store on the way home and buy some fish in a box. While he’s shopping for fish, I’d like a thick slab of salmon and at home he can grill until it has a nice brown crust. That makes it better for me. This type of meal helps me forget about Dog Days!
