I now have my own tale of a brush with death.

While the pages of Sporting Classics magazine are filled with tales of near-death battles between man and various beasts, I now have my own tale of a brush with death. No, I did not get charged by a Cape buffalo, trampled by an elephant or grabbed by a crocodile. I did, however, recently come face to face with the Grim Reaper.

My struggle started as a bout of severe sickness, and Mike rushed me to the veterinary office where pills were prescribed. Yuck, pills are not fun to eat. A few days later I felt worse, so it was time to go back for another visit at the vet’s office. Next came blood tests, X-rays, more pills and emergency surgery followed. I fought the Grim Reaper — and won. I survived the 50/50 chance in surgery, then had IV drip lines running into me through many locations, and now also have a foot-long battle scar to show the next time I go to a bar to hang out, har har! Find someone else, Grim Reaper, I am heading to full recovery after losing 17 pounds and making Mike lose many hours of sleep.

The better news out of all of this is that I made many new friends and must give a tip of the hat to Dr. Gordon Hardaway and the staff at Hardaway Veterinary Clinic in Belgrade, Montana. Their folks watched me struggle, helped me begin my rebound and took me out to see the sun and walk around. I was no model patient; wasn’t always feeling chipper. I will recover and hunt another day! Woo hoo!

Now that I am regaining lost weight, eating dog food after a three week break and Mike is sleeping, things are getting back to normal. The bad news is I have pills to swallow for the next few weeks. (I think those are supplied by the Grim Reaper as a grave joke). I hate swallowing pills. Until next time, Grim Reaper. —Cameron
