Sub-gauge shotguns remain hot items for sportsmen and collectors, and some of the finest examples of these small-bore specialists headlined Rock Island Auction Company’s December’s 6 – 8 Premier Auction.
The first-ever Boss & Co. .410 bore O/U awed the auction hall on Saturday, garnering $352,500. A few lots later, a magnificent trio of factory-engraved 28 gauge Purdeys continued the impressive showing, taking home an astounding $381,875.
Legendary American side-by-sides also made their mark. A scarce Parker .410 VH Grade collected $64,625, while a Parker 28 gauge DHE Grade and a 20 gauge GHE grade each earned $41,125. A Hunter Arms Co./L. C. Smith .410 Specialty Grade brought home $38,188, a Winchester 20 Gauge Model 21 Grand American realized $35,250, and two Superlative Grade Ithaca Classic Doubles, a 28 gauge and a .410 bore, each achieved $29,375.
These superb pieces represent a small sample of highlights that propelled the three-day December spectacular to a $22.6 million total. Another extraordinary selection of rare and exceptional sporting arms will be offered in Rock Island Auction Company’s recently announced May 2-4 Premier event in Bedford, Texas.
