A reader recently sent us this fascinating video of the XIII World Pigeon Championship, held in Madrid in 1949. The venue is the Club de Tiro Somontes, located on the former estate of Generalissimo Franco. It proved to be an American sweep, with the legendary Homer Clark winning on the Men’s side and Rose Palmer on the Women’s. Clark won again in 1951 and remains the only two-time American
It’s obvious that the event was a gala social occasion, and it’s interesting to note that virtually all of the competitors (including Clark) shot side-by-sides. These days, over-and-unders are as ubiquitous in the pigeon ring as they are in the other shotgun sports.
Forewarning: There are no subtitles, so you’ll have to make out what’s transpiring as best you can.
