For 27 years Bill Blackburn made his living as a fishing guide, spending the bulk of his career in Alaska and Montana, two of the country’s premier fisheries. But since the mid-1990s he’s used his experience to craft some of the world’s finest bamboo fly rods and now helms Blackburn Bamboo Fly Rods, in Bozeman, Montana.
As the below video, produced by the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, shows, Blackburn hand-splits bamboo stalks and gradually shapes them into four-through-six-weight custom rods—which retail at $1,500 for a two-piece and $1,800 for a three-piece.
While we at Sporting Classics certainly don’t mind our trustworthy graphite sticks, Blackburn’s simplistic, elegant rods have an undeniable appeal.
