“Grass begets grouse.”
Those are some of the opening words to Ron Spomer’s videoed quest for Nebraska grouse. His hunt took him to Nebraska’s famed Sandhills, once called the “Great American Desert.”
Spomer talks about the history of America’s migration west, and how the grouse would flush before covered wagons as the settlers rolled by. The unique relationship of grass and grouse—how they have symbiotically coexisted in the rolling prairies for millenia—is awe-inspiring.
Spomer’s shooting is also inspiring, with impressive shots at minute 1:47 and 2:03 in particular.
