Watch: Mule Deer Migration

Footage shows the longest, most impressive migration of an ungulate herd in the Lower 48.

This film, produced by Joe Riis Photography and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, showcases video of the most amazing ungulate migration in the Lower 48. While caribou migrate much longer distances in Canada and elk make their seasonal movements from alpine to valley areas stateside, no member of the deer species makes as unique and perilous a journey in the continental U.S. as these mule deer.

The footage not only shows the many hurdles and barriers a mule deer must overcome, but also the vocalizations herds make when “unobserved” by mankind. Strategically placed cameras allowed the producers to capture this communication and share it with the rest of the world.
