Julie Smith of Wisconsin shot this literally once-in-a-lifetime video while enjoying the early morning of June 30. It first appeared on the Green Bay Press-Gazette’s website but has since been picked up by everyone from other newspapers to National Geographic.
Unfortunately, with that exposure came feedback from a wide range of people on the Internet, many of whom have a very different idea of nature and what happens in it. Hundreds of commenters on the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s website, for example, have said that Smith should have somehow jumped into the melee and “stopped the eagle from hurting the fawn.”
Thankfully, Smith, an avid wildlife watcher and former educator, knew better and let nature take its course.
“It was nature happening right in front of me,” Smith told MJS. “I knew I couldn’t do anything about it. I was quite amazed by it, actually.”
